Complete Breakdown
Diesel Engine Course
The RYA Diesel Engine Course is classroom based. You will be taught how an engine works and how to keep it healthy, by using basic checks and maintenance procedures.
It introduces the fuel, cooling, and lubrication systems, as well as essential maintenance, fault recognition and "get you home" techniques. Our boat engine maintenance course uses Volvo Penta and Lister/Petter engines.
Prerequisites - No previous knowledge of engines is required.
Start/Finish Times- Usually 10am to 5pm.

I have completed several courses with First Class Sailing - Competent Crew, Day Skipper, VHF Radio. All have been excellent from start to finish with great instructors, thorough teaching and amazing service.
I recently chartered a boat in the Solent and braved a first ever trip without an instructor. All was going very well until we noticed the engine wasn't expelling exhaust water and I had no idea how to fix the problem.
By a massive stroke of luck, a First Class training instructor was moored nearby. He rafted alongside, came aboard and proceeded to teach an engine masterclass that solved our problem (a loose impeller belt that was easily tightened.)
So First Class sailing has managed to be on-hand even in an emergency!! I am currently booking a Diesel engine course with First Class to improve my motor knowledge.
